Procedures (Opening the Lesson, Developing the Lesson; Concluding the Lesson)

Read, lecture and discuss the reasons for different European

Countries’ interest in the Ohio Valley and the need for shorter

                                    transportation routes.

                                    made crossword puzzle.

Show video on the Illinois Prairie and the I & M Canal. Have students

complete a teacher made question sheet while viewing the video.

Divide class into groups of 4 or 5 students. Teacher will assign a task

to each member of the group to keep group focused.

Hand out to each group a copy of different portions of the history of the

                                    I & M Canal text.

Have each group rewrite the historical text in their own words and put

                                    the description into story form.

Have each group combine all their parts to make one complete story.

Each group will then pretend they are elementary teachers. They will take

their stories and construct an illustrated primary book on their section,

then present their story to the rest of the class acting as if they were

                                    elementary teachers

Give out photos, primary documents, ledgers. Divide them among

the groups so each group will have a different set of documents.

Have the groups complete the document and photo analysis sheets.

Have each group write a description of their documents to share

with the class. Then take one member from each group and

develop a completed report of the I & M canal documents which

will be presented to the class. This group will develop a T-Chart

or Venn diagram to illustrate the findings from the documents.

Teacher and/or students will then construct a thinking map on the

Whiteboard listing everything they have learned about the documents.

individual students will then write and essay about the information

                                    contained in the documents.

Teacher will construct an interactive PowerPoint presentation on

the objectives and the I & M Canal. Students will follow instructions
