Canal Corridor Association is a membership organization that preserves history, protects nature and open space, and creates destinations where people can learn and have fun in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, from Lake Michigan in Chicago to the Illinois River in LaSalle/Peru. It enhances, raises awareness of and expands the parks, trails, landscape and historic sites that make the I&M Canal region a special place. CCA manages the Gaylord Building, a National Trust Historic Site, in Lockport, Illinois. One of the oldest industrial buildings in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, the Gaylord Building is a model of adaptive reuse, featuring the Public Landing restaurant, canal exhibits and more.

April 10, 2008 (Thursday) - Railroads in the Heritage Corridor

The I & M Canal National Heritage Corridor is crisscrossed by a multitude of railways that transport passengers and freight within the region and across the nation.  In spite of the superhighways that parallel and cross over the tracks, the railways are still important to keep the region working.   The public is invited to join William Molony as he examines the history of the tracks.

William Molony is President of the Blackhawk Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, and a Board member of the Will County Historical Society.  Mr. Molony’s is a U.S. Army retiree and a lifelong railroad enthusiast.

April guests choose an entrée selection of either Pot Roast served with mashed potatoes and vegetables; or Cheese Ravioli with marinara sauce.  Dessert will be Bread Pudding with caramel sauce.

May 8, 2008 (Thursday) - Packet Boats on the I & M Canal

For a brief period passenger boats once traveled along the I & M Canal.   This year a real horse-drawn packet boat will once again float along the western end of the canal in LaSalle.  Join historian Rob Vasile as he examines both the design and construction of the packet boats that once traversed the I & M Canal, as well as life on board for crews and passengers.

Ron Vasile is the former Historian of the Canal Corridor Association and currently a history teacher at Lockport Township High School.  Mr. Vasile is also author of numerous works about the I & M Canal.

May guests choose an entrée selection of either Chicken Parmesan served over fettucini with marinara sauce; or Roast Pork served with mashed potatoes and stuffing.  Brownie Sundaes will be served for dessert.

June 12, 2008 (Thursday) - 100 years of the LaSalle County Historical Society

The western terminus of the I & M Canal is located in historic and picturesque LaSalle County.  Its past and future are irrevocably connected to the waterways of the National Heritage Corridor.  For the past century, the people of LaSalle have entrusted their rich and colorful heritage to the LaSalle County Historical Society.  The public is invited to join Edmund B. Thornton as he takes a retrospective journey into the Society’s past while providing insight into its future along the I & M Canal.

June guests choose an entrée selection of either Tilapia with pineapple butter served with wild rice and vegetables; or Stuffed Pepper served with mashed potatoes and vegetables.  Dessert will be Peach Cobbler.
