Canal Corridor Association is a membership organization that preserves history, protects nature and open space, and creates destinations where people can learn and have fun in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, from Lake Michigan in Chicago to the Illinois River in LaSalle/Peru. It enhances, raises awareness of and expands the parks, trails, landscape and historic sites that make the I&M Canal region a special place. CCA manages the Gaylord Building, a National Trust Historic Site, in Lockport, Illinois. One of the oldest industrial buildings in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, the Gaylord Building is a model of adaptive reuse, featuring the Public Landing restaurant, canal exhibits and more.

LaSalle Canal Boat Arrives – Travels 900 Miles Overland to the Waters of the I&M Canal

What: Delivery of the long-awaited LaSalle Canal Boat, the full-size replica canal boat that will give horse-pulled rides on the historic Illinois & Michigan   Canal in LaSalle, Illinois. Built in Albany, New York, the boat will have travelled four days by semi-trailer truck to its canal destination.

When: Friday, June 6. Estimated arrival: between 11 am and noon. Estimated placement of boat in the canal: Roughly a half-hour after arrival.

Where: IL 351 and the I&M Canal (I&M Canal Lock 14 site), LaSalle.

Visuals: Arrival of the 19th century replica canal boat on a semi-trailer truck, possibly with police escort. Boat and trailer measure 110 feet long in an oversized load. A crane, with a 120-foot boom and about 80 tons of counterweight, lifting the boat off the truck and setting it into the landmark canal.

Who: The boat is owned and will be operated by the nonprofit Canal Corridor Association. The City of LaSalle maintains the site where it will dock. The Illinois Department of Transportation owns and manages the Illinois &Michigan Canal State Trail, of which the Lock 14 site is the western terminus.

Background: The LaSalle Canal Boat will give one-hour roundtrip rides powered by horses led along the original I&M Canal towpath, the same hand-dug waterway that Abe Lincoln and other 19th century pioneers traveled. Tour guides dressed as Canal Era crew and passengers will take guests back in time to life on the American frontier and the Illinois prairie.

The LaSalle Canal Boat has been a dream in the making for 35 years. It was first conceived of by volunteers with the LaSalle Rotary Club, who later formed the I&M Canal Volunteers to help bring the dream to fruition. In their honor, the boat is named The Volunteer.

Upcoming LaSalle Canal Boat Events:

June 27 – Boat christening, followed by rides for media, major donors and elected

officials. Details to follow.

June 28-29 – Public grand opening, including talks by the president of Scarano Boat Building, which built the boat. Details to follow.
