It enhances, raises awareness of and expands the parks, trails, landscape and historic sites that make the I&M Canal region a special place. Burgoo Festival - Utica   Sunday, October 12th

Enjoy this Columbus Day weekend enjoying the Burgoo festival, which is one of the best known festival of LaSalle County. This is the biggest event in this area and organized by LaSalle County Historical Society.

People start coming in as early as eight in the morning. People come for variety of crafts and different types of boutiques. Many people just come here to walk around and at the end of the visit some special food for dinner. Last year over two hundred food stands and vendors presented their items. This year the number can get bigger.

Of course the biggest of all attractions is the Burgoo stew, which is cooked specially for this event. It is cooked slowly over a wood fire. Each batch normally has hundreds of pounds of beef and one froth the amount of pork. Some make it chunkier so the people who are eating can see what they are having. Sometimes the barley and other spices are taken out and instead black beans, Italian beans and okra is used. Some people don’t want to talk about their secret ingredients. But taste wise, they never fail to entertain. They are always mouth watering. To top it all off, professionals and local talents will entertain through live music.

If you want to see just one festival here in Northern Illinois, Burgoo festival is the one. No other festival in history of Utica is as large or running as long as Burgoo festival.  For more information call 815.667.4861 or visit  www.burgoofestival.com.

2008 Walk or Ride, Morris - Saturday, October 18th

The I&M Canal Walk or Ride is a special event organized by the nonprofit Canal Corridor Association to feature the great recreational opportunities and other attractions in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor.  The event is generously underwritten by Hayes Mechanical.

“This is a great way to showcase the scenery and charm of the I&M Canal” said Ana Koval, president and CEO of Canal Corridor Association. “It’s also a chance to meet and greet your friends and neighbors while enjoying the outdoors on a fall morning.”

The non-competitive Walk or Ride begins at 8 am and ends at noon in Canalport Park, Morris, Illinois. Choose from a 1- to 5-mile walk or a 10- to 25-mile bike ride. Walkers will head west on the I&M Canal State Trail; bicyclists will ride east. All will meet back at the park to celebrate afterwards with music and refreshments. Prizes will be awarded for the largest teams and the biggest fundraisers.

It’s easy to join the fun. Just go to the Canal Corridor Association website, www.canalcor.org, to sign up and pledge. Registration is $20 per person for adults and $10 per person for children under 12. Why not invite your friends, family and colleagues and form a team? You and your teammates can take care of everything online.

Volunteers are welcome, too. You can help with setup the day before the event and/or with a variety of day-of-event activities, including registration, distributing water on the trail to walkers and riders, goodie bag distribution and more. Volunteer online at the I&M Canal Walk or Ride website.

Still No Resolution to the State Park Closing, Several I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor State Parks are Slated!

As reported in several community newspapers, due to the Governor’s office budget cuts to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ (IDNR) budget, IDNR has announced the closure of several state parks and historic sites.  Three that are of vital importance to the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor are Channahon Parkway State Park, Gebhard Woods State Park in Morris and Illini State Park in Marseilles.  The parks in Channahon and Morris are major access points to users of the I&M Canal State Trail.  The closure of these parks and the lack of funding to repair other sections of the towpath reduces affordable recreational opportunities for both the nearby communities and the larger northeast region of Illinois.  These and 9 other parks and historic sites are scheduled to be closed beginning either October 15th (historic sites) or November 1st (state parks).

Please contact the governor’s office, your local state senator and state representative to request the reinstatement of funding to keep this parks open.  You can also sign an online petition at http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/stop-blagojevich-closing-our-state-parks.html

Dinner & A Lecture Building the Exotic: Frank Lloyd Wright and the Maya Influence

Through his encounter with the reproduced Maya structures at the World's Columbian Exposition, Frank Lloyd Wright became familiar with a style of ornament that would enter his architectural design in the ensuing years.  Mr. Brian Reis will investigate the Chicago Exposition, the Maya reproductions installed there, and the buildings that Mr. Wright designed using the Maya ruins as inspiration.

Brian Reis is Assistant Curator of the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust.

Mr. Reis’ program is the first session of the Dinner & A Lecture autumn series. The educational series is held monthly at the Gaylord Building (200 W. 8th St., Lockport, IL) and catered by the Public Landing Restaurant.  Festivities begin at 6:00 pm with a cash-bar reception followed by dinner at 6:30 pm, and the lecture at 7:30 pm.  October guests choose from a menu of cuisine to be announced.

The program fee, which includes dinner, is $31 for members of the Canal Corridor Association and National Trust for Historic Preservation or $37 for non-members.  Registration discounts are available for the entire autumn series (October, November, and December).  Reservations are required for all sessions.  Please call 815.588.1100 to register and for additional information.
