Canal Corridor Association is a membership organization that preserves history, protects nature and open space, and creates destinations where people can learn and have fun in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, from Lake Michigan in Chicago to the Illinois River in LaSalle/Peru. It enhances, raises awareness of and expands the parks, trails, landscape and historic sites that make the I&M Canal region a special place. CCA manages the Gaylord Building, a National Trust Historic Site, in Lockport, Illinois. One of the oldest industrial buildings in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, the Gaylord Building is a model of adaptive reuse, featuring the Public Landing restaurant, canal exhibits and more.

Canal Fact

From 1848 until 1852, thousands of people traveled on I&M canal packet boats between Chicago and LaSalle.  The railroads made passenger traffic on the canal obsolete.

New Exhibition at the Gaylord Building

The Canal Corridor Association is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition Celebrating Twenty Years: The Gaylord Building on the Public Landing, 1987-2007.  The exhibit commemorates the historic site’s past, present and future.  The Gaylord Building and the Public Landing have been central parts of Lockport and landmarks along the Illinois & Michigan Canal for approximately 170 years.  Situated along the northern edge of the Public Landing, the Gaylord Building reflects the canal’s early importance to Illinois.  Its many tenants and uses exemplify Lockport’s commercial significance throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.  Celebrating twenty years since its rehabilitation in the 1980s, the structure’s pivotal role reaches across America, as a national example of adaptive re-use that is redefining how a historic structure can be saved and interpreted in the United States.

The Gaylord Building is one of the oldest commercial structures in Illinois.  Built in 1838 as the supply depot for the Illinois & Michigan Canal’s construction, the building later served a variety of functions, including grain warehouse, dry goods store, lock factory and plumbing supply store.  Renovated in the 1980s by the Gaylord Lockport Company, the limestone building received the Presidential Award for Historic Preservation in 1988 from President Ronald Reagan.  In the 1996 the building was acquired by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which partnered six years later with the Canal Corridor Association to provide local management for the historic site.

Celebrating Twenty Years has been made possible with the assistance of Lewis University and individual contributions by Mr. Gerald W. Adelmann, Mr. James Cowan, Dr. Dennis Cremin, Mrs. Barbara C. Donnelley, Mr. John Fitzpatrick, Br. James Gaffney FSC, Ms. Laura Kiran, Ms. Ramona LaMontagne, and Mr. Henry Pasch.   The exhibition opens to the general public on Saturday, October 27, 2007, during regular open hours.   Public gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday from noon until 5:00 p.m.  Admission is free.  The Gaylord Building is located at 200 W. 8th Street in Lockport, Illinois.  For additional information, go online to www.gaylordbuilding.org or call 815.588.1100.

Next Dinner & A Lecture at the Gaylord Building

History filled the lives of Native Americans with tragedy from the landing of Christopher Columbus in 1492 through the twentieth century.  Students of history often hear about the “Trail of Tears” and the “Massacre at Wounded Knee,” but the public rarely learns of the calamities that befell the American Indians who once lived in their respective home states.  The Sac & Fox and the Pottawatomie are just two of the Illinois tribes that Dr. Theodore Karamanski will discuss in his presentation Ethnic Cleansing in the Corridor: The Fate of the Indians of Northern Illinois.   Dr. Karamanski, who is a Professor of History at Loyola University, will trace the struggle of Native Americans in Illinois and their subsequent removal from the state.   The program will be held at the Gaylord Building Historic Site on Thursday, November 8, 2007 in the evening.

Ethnic Cleansing in the Corridor is part of the Dinner & A Lecture education series, which is held monthly at the Gaylord Building, 200 W. 8th Street, Lockport, Illinois.  The event is catered by the Public Landing Restaurant.  Festivities begin at 6:00 pm with a cash-bar reception followed by dinner at 6:45 pm, and the lecture at 7:45 pm.  November guests choose from a menu of Stuffed Chicken Breast (free range, boneless, skinless, breast of chicken, lightly breaded and filled with andouille sausage, smoked gouda and spinach) served with wild rice; or Salmon filet coated with BBQ sauce, served with sautéed vegetables and mashed sweet potatoes.  Pumpkin Pie with whipped cream will be served for dessert.

The program fee, which includes dinner, is $27 for members of the Canal Corridor Association and National Trust for Historic Preservation, or $33 for non-members. Reservations are required.  Please call 815.588.1100 for additional information.  The Gaylord Building is a National Trust Historic Site managed by the Canal Corridor Association.

Become a “Living Historian” for the Gaylord Building!

The Gaylord Building Historic Site invites men and women of all ages to become “living historians!”   The historic site’s vintage base ball program, the Lockport Sleepers, interpret the national pastime as it was played prior to the Civil War.  Ballists (players) use reproduction equipment, wear period uniforms, and play by 1858 rules.  Bugs (fans) wear appropriate period clothing with accessories and root for the Sleepers, providing the general public with historical information about the antebellum period.  The current roster of ballists and bugs range in age from 20s to 50s and reside in numerous communities throughout the Chicago metropolitan area, including Lockport.  Gentlemen who are interested in becoming ballists are requested to attend one of two information sessions that are scheduled for Wednesday, November 7 and 14, 2007, beginning at 7:00pm.  Ladies and other gentlemen who are interested in simply becoming “bugs” are requested to attend an information session on Monday, December 3, 2007, beginning at 7:00pm.  All three sessions are free and will be held at the Gaylord Building Historic Site.  Interested individuals who want to discover more should R.S.V.P. by calling 815.588.1100 or emailing mharmon@canalcor.org.
