Canal Corridor Association is a membership organization that preserves history, protects nature and open space, and creates destinations where people can learn and have fun in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, from Lake Michigan in Chicago to the Illinois River in LaSalle/Peru. It enhances, raises awareness of and expands the parks, trails, landscape and historic sites that make the I&M Canal region a special place. CCA manages the Gaylord Building, a National Trust Historic Site, in Lockport, Illinois. One of the oldest industrial buildings in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, the Gaylord Building is a model of adaptive reuse, featuring the Public Landing restaurant, canal exhibits and more.

CCA President's Note

The good news is starting to sink in: the Heritage Corridor has finally been re-authorized by Congress. It became more real as many of you joined CCA staff and board in a celebratory reception last month. It becomes more real as we consider what’s possible when federal funding become available.

But therein lies the sticking point. Congress made the Heritage Corridor and CCA eligible for all-important federal funding, but it must still appropriate the money. As the nation’s budget process grinds on, we wait to see if and when federal funds will be released this fiscal year.

We should know in January if we made it into the annual budget, and will have a better idea then of how 2007 will look.

In the meantime, let us help with your holiday shopping. Need a stocking stuffer for the canal or history buffs on your list? For a limited time, order the Prairie Tides documentary DVD, and enjoy free gift wrapping and shipping. You pay just $19.95 per DVD, and we’ll wrap your gift and ship it at no cost to you.

To order, call Pat Chinderle at 815-588-1100 or email her at cca@canalcor.org. Please provide the shipping address and specify if you’d like your order gift-wrapped.

And as always, thank you for all your support.

Ana B. Koval

President & CEO

Annual Boat Captain's Luncheon and Raffle Celebrating the 25th Year of CCA

As part of its 25th anniversary celebration, the Canal Corridor Association will be hosting its twelfth Canal Boat Captain’s Benefit Luncheon on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 honoring Judith Stockdale.  The Canal Boat Captain’s Award seeks to acknowledge individuals or organizations that demonstrate exemplary commitment to furthering the goals of the Illinois & Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor.  By awarding this prestigious tribute, the Canal Corridor Association commends leadership in preserving natural and historic resources, and celebrates the public/private partnerships that are dedicated to improving the quality of life throughout this rich and diverse region.

A great idea goes nowhere without wings. Judith Stockdale and Openlands Project were that driving force for the Illinois & Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor.  Ms. Stockdale and Openlands, a nonprofit organization she headed for eight years, were key to creation of the I&M Canal Corridor. Presented in the 1970s with the new idea of planning for and protecting the I&M Canal landscape as a mosaic of natural, cultural, historic and archaeological resources, Ms. Stockdale recognized the idea’s potential and championed it.

Save the date for the upcoming Boat Captains Luncheon on February 21, 2007 at the Sheraton Hotel & Towers.

Heritage Corridor Network Kick-off Meeting

As the new management entity for the Illinois & Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor, Canal Corridor Association (CCA) intends to bring together public attractions for the betterment of all corridor communities.  With that aspiration, CCA is establishing a network of such sites that are located within the corridor.  The network is open to all non-profit and government facilities within the corridor that emphasize cultural heritage and natural heritage.  They are sites where the public can learn and have fun.  Facilities could be, but are not limited to, historic sites, zoos, nature centers, arboretums, botanical gardens, performing arts centers, and museums of art, history, science, and natural history.

A charter meeting  has been scheduled for Monday, December 4, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. in the historic Gaylord Building (200 W. 8th Street, Lockport, Illinois 60441).  Participants will explore the possibilities that lay ahead by determining the needs of potential members.  Through a “brainstorming” session attendees will review potential activities like joint programming, mutual assistance, joint publicity, and staff development.   Entities that meet the criteria and would like to attend the meeting should contact CCA at 815.588.1100.

GAYLORD BUILDING HISTORIC SITE EVENTS

Dinner/Lecture Series Continues December 7th with "ST. NICHOLAS AND THE ORIGINS OF CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS"

How did a green tree with lights and a red-suited man become associated with a historical event celebrated by people around the globe?  Come discover the origins of traditions that we have taken for granted during the Christmas holiday.   Learn why many of us decorate evergreens with ornaments and strings of lights, or why countless children visit the “jolly old elf” at the mall.  Living-history interpreter Jerome Kowalski will share these stories and many more with audience members at the next Dinner and a Lecture scheduled for Thursday, December 7, 2006, at the Gaylord Building Historic Site.

Beginning at 6:00 p.m., the evening includes dinner and the enlightening presentation about St. Nicholas and the Origins of Christmas Traditions.  Reservations are required, as seating is very limited.  Dinner includes your choice of prime rib or chicken marsala and peach cobbler a la mode for desert.  The program fee, which includes dinner, is $26 for Canal Corridor Association members, and $32 for non-members.  Please call 815.588.1100 for reservations and additional information.

Collectors Brown Bag Lunch - COLLECTING FISHING LURES & TACKLE

Many of us remember “show and tell” day in elementary school.  Well, it’s back!  This time it’s for adults!   Join us at the Gaylord Building Historic Site for a new twist to an old activity at the new monthly program The Collectors Brown Bag Lunch.  Each month a new collector “shows” his collection while “telling” us all about it.  As the title suggests, audience members are welcome to bring their lunch while enjoying the program.

At the next Collectors Brown Bag Lunch, Mr. Dan Basore of the Historical Fishing Display will share his knowledge and experience about collecting fishing lures and tackle from ancient times to the present.  You’ll discover the stone tools of pre-Columbian Native Americans, as well as rudimentary metal fishing gear of early European settlers.  Mr. Basore’s presentation begins at Noon on Monday, December 18, 2006, in the historic Gaylord Building.   The program fee is $4 for Canal Corridor Association members and $6 for non-members.  Please call 815.58.1100 for additional information.

Vintage Base Ball Comes to Lockport

After a well-received series of exhibition games in October, the Lockport Sleepers Vintage Base Ball Club has been established as permanent educational activity of the Gaylord Building Historic Site.  What is vintage base ball?   It is both a sporting event and a living-history program.  It is the national pastime as it was played in the mid-1800s.  It is a nostalgic journey back to a simpler time.

Vintage base ball players wear period uniforms, use reproduction equipment, and follow historic rules.   The Sleepers serve as goodwill ambassadors throughout their journeys, which will include six home dates and seven away dates in 2007.  Ultimately, they “interpret” the past for contemporary audiences while thrilling the public with exploits of athletic skills, or a lack thereof.

The Sleepers are still seeking “hands” (players) and “kranks” (fans) to participate in this exciting activity.  Residency in Lockport is not required.  However, an enjoyment of history and sport would be helpful.  “Kranks” can be any age, but “hands” must be at least 18 years of age, although most players are between 30 and 50.  Anyone who is interested in participating as a “hand” or a “krank” should contact Mark Harmon, Gaylord Building Site Director, at 815.588.1100 for more details.

Gaylord Building Volunteers Orientation

Volunteers are the life blood of all non-profits groups, and the Gaylord Building Historic Site is no different.  Volunteers are vital to fulfilling the quality services and activities provided to the public.  The site needs individuals for greeting visitors, guiding tours, assisting special events, presenting educational programs; researching historical information; promoting the site; fulfilling office clerical tasks; and a variety of other responsibilities.  There are individual benefits for volunteers, such as making new friends, learning new things, developing new skills, and enhancing existing talents.  The greatest benefit of volunteering is the satisfaction of making a difference in the life of each person the volunteer connects with at the Gaylord Building.

A volunteer orientation session has been scheduled for everyone interested in participating in volunteer activities at the Gaylord Building Historic Site.  The session will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, December 4, 2006.  If you are interested in attending, please R.S.V.P. by calling 815.588.1100.
