Goals/Objectives:
In this lesson students will read a short story about the
history of the I&M Canal and will use self-directed activities to expand
the lesson according to their interests and ability levels. |

Procedures: Students will begin a K-W-L chart about the I&M Canal Students will listen to a short story about Nell, the
most famous mule who worked on the I&M Canal. Students will answer any questions from the chart that
they can and will add additional questions raised from hearing the story. Students will work to complete activities related to the
story using the computers and disks. Students will click on the links provided and discover
more about the I&M Canal by completing the activities provided.

Materials: Teacher-generated short story about the I&M Canal K-W-L chart Computers and printers for student use (handouts, worksheets, equipment, etc.) |

Assessment(s): Teacher observation of students’ participation in class
discussion Teacher-generated rubric with points allotted for
completing various inter-active activities Adaptations for students with special needs: Students with special needs will be paired with a partner
to assist in using the computers. In
addition, the teacher may assign specific activities that are more
appropriate for individual students.
Students who have been identified as gifted, for example, will be
required to complete certain higher level activities along with their
self-selected activities. Students with learning disabilities will be assigned
adapted activities. |

Grading Rubric: Each activity will be designated as level 1, 2, or 3,
depending on the level of difficulty and time requirements. Students will self-select a combination of
activities in order to determine their grades.*
60-65 points = A 50-60 points = B 40-50 points =C 35-40 = D Less than 35 = F *Students with disabilities may be assessed using a
different scale. |
