Ghost Town
About .6 miles west of the intersection of Ridge and Hansel Roads, you can see the surviving landmarks of the tiny town of Dresden, which grew until the railroads bypassed it in 1852. Before the canal opened in 1848, people traveling by wagon or stagecoach along the rough roads could find a hot meal or a good night’s sleep at the Rutherford Tavern. Now a private home, the white clapboard tavern still stands across from an historic canal-side warehouse, now used as a barn. Today, the tavern, warehouse and remains of a cemetery are all that survive from the early town.
