Victorian Landscape
Just east of Morris, Hansel Road becomes Cemetery Road, named for Evergreen
Cemetery. The wrought iron fence, Victorian markers and winding cemetery
drives date from a time when cemeteries were the first
park-like landscapes created in the United States. Many of Morris
most influential citizens are buried here.
Chief Shabbona
A large boulder marks the grave of Potawatomi Chief Shabbona. Originally
a fierce opponent of Americans, Shabbonna transferred his allegiance after
1812. Known for warning white settlers of coming attacks during the Black
Hawk War of 1832, Shabbona was shunned by his tribe and cheated by settlers
out of his land. Friends in the Morris area gave him a homestead where
he died in 1859.
