Dinner & A Lecture: Parishes on the Prairie, Roman Catholic Churches Along the Illinois & Michigan Canal
The I&M Canal attracted many Catholic immigrants who built the canal and worked in its new industries and farms. The histories of each group and the communities in which they settled can be told through their parish and the role their church played in their lives.

Parishes on the Prairie is presented by Eileen McMahon, Assistant Professor of History at Lewis University. She is the author of the book What Parish are You From?: The Chicago Irish Parish Community and Race Relations, 1916-1970, as well as numerous articles including, "The Irish in Illinois" in the Encyclopedia of the Irish in America, ed. by Michael Glazier, and "The Literature of the Sox Side" Chicago History Magazine. Dr. McMahon teaches courses on U.S. immigration, ethnicity, and race; the history of Illinois; and the history of U.S. Catholics.

The presentation is part of the Dinner & A Lecture series that is held at the Gaylord Building Historic Site, 200 W. 8th Street, Lockport, Illinois. The evening’s activities begin at 6:00 p.m. with a cash-bar reception, followed by dinner at 6:30pm and the lecture at 7:30pm. Guest have an entrée choice of either pot roast of beef served with jardinière of root vegetables and garlic mashed potatoes; or roast pork loin covered with gravy and served with sage dressing, mashed sweet potatoes and sauté of vegetable medley. Dessert will be bread pudding with carmel sauce.

Admission is $31 for members of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Canal Corridor Association; or $37 for non-members. Reservations are required. For additional information, please call 1.815.838.9400.

LOCKPORT SLEEPERS BASE BALL CLUB
The Lockport Sleepers Base Ball Club cordially invites ladies, gentlemen and children to participate in its 2008 activities as volunteer interpreters.  The Sleepers interpret the national pastime as it was played prior to the Civil War.  Ballists (players) use reproduction equipment, wear period uniforms, and play by 1858 rules.  Bugs (fans) wear appropriate period clothing with accessories and root for the Sleepers, providing the general public with historical information about the antebellum period.  The current roster of ballists and bugs range in age from 20s to 50s and reside in numerous communities throughout the Chicago metropolitan area, including Lockport.

Gentlemen who are interested in becoming “ballists” or ladies and other gentlemen who are interested in simply becoming “bugs” should contact Mark Harmon at 815.588.1100.
