Canal Corridor Association is a membership organization that preserves history, protects nature and open space, and creates destinations where people can learn and have fun in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, from Lake Michigan in Chicago to the Illinois River in LaSalle/Peru. It enhances, raises awareness of and expands the parks, trails, landscape and historic sites that make the I&M Canal region a special place. CCA manages the Gaylord Building, a National Trust Historic Site, in Lockport, Illinois. One of the oldest industrial buildings in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, the Gaylord Building is a model of adaptive reuse, featuring the Public Landing restaurant, canal exhibits and more. |

An Unobstructed View For the first time in almost four decades, the Gaylord Building, a National Trust Historic Site managed by the Canal Corridor Association, has an unobstructed view of Lockport's historic Public Landing.
On Tuesday, July 8, 2008, the Will County Historical Society moved the last of its historic structures to make way for "Lincoln Landing," a new memorial honoring Abraham Lincoln and his many connections to the Illinois & Michigan Canal. The historic structures are being relocated and will be restored. The new park, which is being funded by the Give Something Back Foundation, will be dedicated on 200th anniversary of the 16th President's birth - February 12, 2009.
Emerging Initiatives in Preservation Historic Preservation has come of age in the last few years, with growing popular acceptance leading to the steady integration of preservation to the mainstream of our society. Yet preservationists continue to face new challenges every day as new threats to historic resources emerge. In the last few years, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, as the national voice of the preservation movement, has been trying to take the offensive in the fight to save America’s best places for future generations with some success. Join Mr. Royce Yeater on Thursday, July 10, 2008, for Emerging Initiatives in Preservation, an overview of the up-and-coming new ideas and programs on the drawing board at the Trust which will support preservation at the local level as never before, while simultaneously increasing the Trust’s visibility and base of support nationally.
Mr. Yeater’s program is the first session of the Dinner & A Lecture summer series. The educational programs are held monthly at the Gaylord Building Historic Site (200 W. 8th St., Lockport, IL) and catered by the Public Landing Restaurant. Festivities begin at 6:00 pm with a cash-bar reception followed by dinner at 6:30 pm, and the lecture at 7:30 pm. July guests choose an entrée of either beef stroganoff with egg noodles, or salmon with lemon butter served with wild rice and vegetables. Vanilla ice cream with raspberry sauce will be served for dessert. The program fee, which includes dinner, is $31 for members of the Canal Corridor Association and National Trust for Historic Preservation or $37 for non-members. Registration discounts are available for the entire summer series (July, August, and September). Reservations are required for all sessions. Future summer programs include: “The Future of Will County’s Past” presented by Mrs. Lynne Smaczny, Executive Director of the Will County Historical Society, on August 14th; and “Exploring the Prairie to Prairie Continuum: Returning the Prairie o the Prairie State” on September 11th and presented by Mr. Patrick Thrasher, Interpretive Specialist of the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie. For reservations and additional information, including package information for all three summer sessions, please call 815.588.1100. Please note that reservations must be made the day prior to the event.
1858 “Base Ball” in Lockport Experience the national pastime as it was played before the Civil War. Players wear period uniforms, use replica equipment and play by 1858 rules on a historic all-grass field. It is part history, part sport, part theater and a lot of fun! It is the third “vintage base ball” season of the Lockport Sleepers.
The next home matches of the Lockport Sleepers Base Ball Club will be held on Sunday, July 13, 2008, beginning at noon. The Sleepers host a round-robin of games with the veteran Oregon Ganymedes Vintage Base Ball Club and the rookies of Peoria’s Fort Clark Vintage Base Ball Club. The three matches of seven-innings each will be held on Sleepers Field, which is located in Dellwood Park at Dell Park Avenue and Lois Avenue. To enhance the historic experience, fans are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch and a blanket (or folding chairs) for comfort. Admission is free. The Lockport Sleepers are an educational program of the Gaylord Building. For additional information about the Lockport and vintage base ball, please call 815.588.1100 or go online to http://www.canalcor.org/gaylord/Sleepers/index.html.
2nd Annual Summer Dinner Promenade Come enjoy a summer day at the second annual “Summer Dinner Promenade” on Wednesday, July 16, 2008. The event is a “progressive dinner” with delicious cuisine and sparking conversation in exquisite locales. Guests will start at the Will County Historical Society (803 State Street, Lockport, IL) and progress to the Gaylord Building Historic Site, and then to the Lockport Township Park District’s Gladys Fox Museum. The festivities will conclude at the Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery. Lockport’s four cultural attractions are located within walking distance, but transportation will be available for those in need. This year’s festivities include two sessions. The afternoon session begins at 2:00pm, and the evening session begins at 6:00 pm. Admission is $40 per person, but there is a $5 senior discount for the afternoon session. Registration by Monday, July 14, 2008, is required through the Canal Corridor Association at 201 W. 10th Street, Lockport, IL. For additional information and registration, please call 815.588.1100.
“Public Enemies” on the Public Landing
Hollywood came to Lockport on
Friday, June 27, 2008, for the filming of the gangster movie
“Public Enemies,” starring Johnny Depp as John Dillinger and
co-starring Giovanni Ribisi as gangster Alvin Karpowicz (aka
"Creepy Karpis"). At least three different scenes were shot in
town, including one at the Gaylord Building. The historic site
was temporarily transformed into the “Rockford Tool & Die”
company, standing near a makeshift train platform.
“Behind-the-scenes” interviews with some of the movie’s
producers were filmed inside the Public Landing Restaurant.
Public Enemies is scheduled to be released during the summer of
2009.
