Canal Corridor Association is a membership organization that preserves history, protects nature and open space, and creates destinations where people can learn and have fun in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, from Lake Michigan in Chicago to the Illinois River in LaSalle/Peru. It enhances, raises awareness of and expands the parks, trails, landscape and historic sites that make the I&M Canal region a special place. CCA manages the Gaylord Building, a National Trust Historic Site, in Lockport, Illinois. One of the oldest industrial buildings in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, the Gaylord Building is a model of adaptive reuse, featuring the Public Landing restaurant, canal exhibits and more.

Several I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor State Parks are Slated for Closing!

As reported in several community newspapers, due to the Governor’s office budget cuts to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ (IDNR) budget, IDNR has announced the closure of several state parks and historic sites.  Three that are of vital importance to the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor are Channahon Parkway State Park, Gebhard Woods State Park in Morris and Illini State Park in Marseilles.  The parks in Channahon and Morris are major access points to users of the I&M Canal State Trail.  The closure of these parks and the lack of funding to repair other sections of the towpath reduces affordable recreational opportunities for both the nearby communities and the larger northeast region of Illinois.  These and 9 other parks and historic sites are scheduled to be closed beginning either October 1st (historic sites) or November 1st (state parks).

Please contact the governor’s office, your local state senator and state representative to request the reinstatement of funding to keep this parks open.  You can also sign an online petition at http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/stop-blagojevich-closing-our-state-parks.html
