Canal Corridor Association is a membership organization that preserves history, protects nature and open space, and creates destinations where people can learn and have fun in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, from Lake Michigan in Chicago to the Illinois River in LaSalle/Peru. It enhances, raises awareness of and expands the parks, trails, landscape and historic sites that make the I&M Canal region a special place. CCA manages the Gaylord Building, a National Trust Historic Site, in Lockport, Illinois. One of the oldest industrial buildings in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, the Gaylord Building is a model of adaptive reuse, featuring the Public Landing restaurant, canal exhibits and more.

CCA President's Note

Hello everyone,

It looks like winter has arrived in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor. The Canal Corridor Association is sponsoring a few events this month. First join us at the Gaylord Building in Lockport on Thursday night for a Public Landing dinner and a lecture on Candy and Chocolate in Northern Illinois by Edmond Opler. (Details below.)

Also join us on any Saturday before Christmas at the Lock 16 Visitors Center in LaSalle for a visit with Santa between 11AM and 1PM. While our canal boat, THE VOLUNTEER has retired for the winter and our mules, Larry and Mo are on vacation until April, the staff at the Lock 16 Cafe and Gift Shop is busy baking. The cafe is open from 7AM to 5 PM during the week, 8AM to 5 PM Saturdays, and 9AM to 5PM on Sundays.

Stop for coffee and pastries in the morning, hot soup and sandwiches at lunch, or hot chocolate, peppermint mochas, or pie anytime of the day. Janet and Debbie are baking holiday pies from scratch, call 815-223-1851 to order.

If you are still working on your Christmas list, CCA has three unique gift ideas - a 2009 boat ride and lunch combination, a gift registration for the 2009 I&M Canal Walk or Ride, and a LaSalle Canal Boat shopping bag. (See all the details below.)

Enjoy the holidays,

Ana B. Koval

President & CEO, Canal Corridor Association

Chocolate & Candy at the Gaylord Building

Author Judith Viorst once declared, "Strength is the capacity to break a chocolate bar into four pieces with your bare hands - and then eat just one of the pieces." The chocolate weak are invited to a sweet evening event to discover the history and scrumptious delights of chocolates and candies made in the Chicago metropolitan region. Chocolate and Candy in Northern Illinois will be presented on Thursday, December 4, 2008, by Mr. Edmond F. Opler III, President & CEO of World's Finest Chocolate.

The program is the third session of the Dinner & A Lecture autumn series. The educational series is held monthly at the Gaylord Building (200 W. 8th St., Lockport, IL) and catered by the Public Landing Restaurant. Festivities begin at 6:00 pm with a cash-bar reception followed by dinner at 6:30 pm, and the lecture at 7:30 pm. December guests choose an entree of either chicken romano topped with Dijon cream sauce and served with garlic mashed potatoes and vegetables; or baked ham topped with pineapple sauce and served with mashed sweet potatoes and vegetables. Dessert will be decadent chocolate fudge cake a la mode.

The program fee, which includes dinner, is $31 for members of the Canal Corridor Association and National Trust for Historic Preservation or $37 for non-members. Reservations are required. Please call 815.838.9400 to register and for additional information. The Gaylord Building is a historic site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and managed by the Canal Corridor Association.
