Canal Corridor Association is
a membership organization that preserves history, protects nature and
open space, and creates destinations where people can learn and have
fun in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, from Lake Michigan in Chicago to the Illinois River in LaSalle/Peru. It enhances, raises awareness of
and expands the parks, trails, landscape and historic sites that make
the I&M Canal region a special place. CCA manages the Gaylord Building, a National Trust Historic Site, in Lockport, Illinois. One of the oldest industrial buildings in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, the Gaylord Building is a model of adaptive reuse, featuring the Public Landing restaurant, canal exhibits and more. |
LaSalle Canal Boat opens Friday
More than 11,000 people rode the LaSalle Canal Boat- The Volunteer
last year in its first season. If you haven’t had the chance, now
it’s your turn. The LaSalle Canal Boat 2009 tour season opens
Friday, April 17. Boat rides are offered daily at 10 am, 11:15 am, 1 pm, 2:15 pm and 3:30 pm. Call  815-223-1851 to make your reservation.So
step back in time, ride the LaSalle Canal Boat now and take advantage
of a spring special: Two guests ride for the price of one through May 16. Go to www.lasallecanalboat.org and print up your two-for-one coupon. Pick up your tickets at the Lock
16 Center, downtown LaSalle’s newest gathering spot at the corner
of First and Joliet streets in downtown LaSalle, two blocks from the
boat. In fact, the Lock 16 Center is so popular, CCA has extended the hours of operation. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, 7 am to 7 pm. Tuesday, 7 am to 8:30 pm. Saturday & Sunday 8 am to 7 pm. Extended hours for groups by special arrangement.Ride
the boat, enjoy a meal, treat yourself to something from the gift shop.
You can even check your email if you must – the Center offers
free Wi-Fi. Fares
are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 65+, $6 for youth 16 and under.
Until May 16, two guests ride for the price of one. Children under age
3 ride free. Special family rate – 2 adults with 2 children under

From the Auld Sod to the New Prairie
Sunday, April 19, 1 PM at Lock 16, 754 First Street, LaSalle
Historian, scholar and musician Lee Murdock
will present “From the Auld Sod to the New Prairie.” A look
at the Irish immigrants of Illinois in both traditional ballads and
modern songs, Murdock weaves music and stories to tell the tale of
building canals, railroads and new lives in America. Free. Co-sponsored
by the Canal Corridor Association and the LaSalle County Historical Society. Funded by the Illinois Humanities Council.
Relax at a Lock 16 Afternoon Tea
Four
afternoon teas are scheduled in April and May at Lock 16 in
LaSalle. The next two monthly teas are scheduled for tomorrow,
Thursday, April 16th (a few spots are still available) and Saturday, May 9th (the day before Mother’s Day). Two Mary Todd Lincoln teas are scheduled for Thursday, April 30th and Saturday, May 23rd. All of the teas include scones, tea sandwiches,
and sweets with a variety of teas (or coffee if you prefer). Mrs.
Lincoln shares stories of her courtship with Mr. Lincoln and details of
her wedding day. For reservations, call the Lock 16 Café
at 815-223-1851. $19.50 per person.
